Savings Goal Calculator — Free 2025

Calculate how long it will take to reach your savings goal with regular contributions.

Whether you are saving for a house down payment, a wedding, or a dream vacation, a concrete plan makes the goal far more achievable. This calculator tells you how long it will take to reach your target — or how much you need to save each month to hit it by a certain date — factoring in any interest your savings earn along the way.

How the calculation works

Starting from your current savings, the calculator adds your regular contributions and any interest earned each period, then counts how long it takes to reach your target. Because interest compounds, higher yields and longer timelines let your contributions do a bit less of the work.

Where you keep the money matters

For short-term goals, a high-yield savings account keeps your money safe and liquid while earning 4–5% in recent years. For longer horizons, investing may earn more but adds risk — money you need within a couple of years generally should not be in the stock market.

A worked example

To save $30,000 for a down payment with $5,000 already set aside and a 4% APY high-yield account, contributing $600 a month gets you there in about 39 months. Raise the contribution to $900 a month and you reach the goal in roughly 27 months.

Reaching your goal faster

  • Automate transfers on payday so saving happens before you can spend the money.
  • Keep goal savings in a separate high-yield account so it earns interest and stays out of sight.
  • Direct windfalls — tax refunds, bonuses, gifts — straight toward the goal.
  • Revisit the plan if your income changes; even small increases in contributions shorten the timeline noticeably.
